Sky Above Elefsina

Sky Above Elefsina
The Greek city Elefsina, European Capital of Culture 2023, has invited the Dresdner Sinfoniker for an extravagant performance. The ensemble will impregnate the Sky above Elefsina with music and intimately connect with public yet little-known places of the seaside town, which shares the 2023 European Capital of Culture title with Timisoara in Romania and Veszprém in Hungary. Music specifically composed and arranged for the occasion will be performed alongside other works in Elefsina’s unique locations.
The musical journey starts on the roofs of the historic town on which alphorn players will summon other musicians, positioned in the nearby archaeological site, the sanctuary of Eleusis — this call to assemble for the event intended to reveal and describe cultural transitions and overlaps. The concert embraces music from diverse historical and cultural eras. Works by Venetian Renaissance composer Giovanni Gabrieli will be performed with music by film composer John Williams and contemporary pieces by Konstantia Gourzi and Wieland Reissmann. Exceptional arrangements for french horns, alphorns, trumpets and tubas provide a common link in an unusual classical concert reflecting a narrative of cultural transitions through the centuries.
